This series consists of unpaid accounts presented to the court. The accounts include: (1) the name of the debtor and creditor, (2) the date when the goods or services were contracted, of the article or service contracted (4) and the price of each.

These applications were all made by veterans who served in the army or navy of the Confederate States of America. These applications include the name of the military unit in which each veteran served, the type of product he wished to peddle, the age of the applicant and the date of the application.

This series consists of apprenticeship records. These are mostly limited to masters' and apprentices' bonds which list the names of each, the date of indenture and usually the names of the parents of the apprentice.

This series contains bonds, oaths and commissions of county officers of Gilmer County.

These brochures were received by the probate judge. Many of them were prepared by publishing companies, the State of Georgia and companies desiring to acquire business with Gilmer County.

This series is composed of cashed checks signed by the ordinary in his official capacity as the administrator of the business affairs of Gilmer County. The checks include the name of payee and the work for which payee was paid and the date of the payment.

This series is composed of affidavits wherein persons finding animals who have strayed from their owners describe such animals. Some of these affidavits were made by the original owners claiming their property, and others were made by new owners who found and cared for strayed animals and who now claimed them as their property or who wished to be compensated for their care of the animals. Other affidavits were made by two or more potential owners claiming the strayed animals.

The documents comprising this series include petitions from minors and others for guardians, guardians bonds, guardianship annual returns, letters of guardianship, letters of dismission from guardianship and similar records.

The bonds largely comprising this series were usually issued for a period of one year. They were issued to tavern owners and to persons offering hostelry services to travelers. Each bond issuer agreed to "keep an orderly and decent house and shall not suffer any kind of gaming in his house and shall conform to the several laws now in force for the regulation of taverns and the licensing of persons to sell spiritous liquors."

These volumes are used to document the names of registered voters in Gilmer County for the period indicated. The entries are listed by the number of the Georgia Militia District in which they registered and alphabetically within each militia district. Information found in each includes name of registrant, date registered, age, color of skin, whether or not descendant of soldier and occupation.

This artificial series has been created for the purpose of collecting the miscellaneous records of the Probate Court of Gilmer County because they are too few in number to merit a separate series. The finding aid provides dates of creation and names of the principal parties involved, if indicated.

One of the duties of the probate court was to provide general direction in overseeing roads and bridges construction personnel. This series is composed mostly of tablets and other bound volumes. Some of these records include the name of the Georgia militia district in which the roads and bridges personnel worked and some do not.

This series consist of petitions to the probate judge to have certain individuals declared insane and thus to have these individuals committed to the state mental hospital at Milledgeville. This series also includes the proceedings of lunacy hearings in which a jury Examined alleged lunatics to determine their sanity and received testimony or affidavits from interested persons.

The petitions files comprising this series,include applications for pensions, depositions of others supporting such claims, marriage licenses to support widows' applications for soldiers' pensions, affidavits from physicians that individual claimants were physically unable to perform manual labor and other related documents.

Pony homesteads are small homesteads that were exempt from property taxation. The records comprising this series consist primarily of petitions to the ordinary to obtain such exemptions and schedules of property to be so exemptied. These records include: the name of applicant, date of application, a list of property to be exemptied and the taxable value of each piece of property.

This series consists of receipts. These receipts contain the names of the payer and the payee and the date of transaction. Most of these receipts record fees earned by the probate judge and other county officials for the performance of official duties. The few personal receipts remain a mystery.

This series consists of (1) petitions to the ordinary to allow private roads to become public roads, (2) petition to disallow such changes, (3) blueprints for bridges, (4) reports of committees to review such projects and (5) other documents relating to the planning and creation of public roads and bridges in Gilmer County. These projects usually described a certain road as existing between two or more residences or between two or more towns or similar locations.

This series is composed of annual and monthly tax statements prepared by the Tax Collector of Gilmer County. These statements contains the amounts collected on both the general tax and the poll tax for a particular year. The series also contains lists of the insolvent tax payers and lists of the paupers of Gilmer County. In the 1890's, the Tax Collector began issuing monthly tax statements and continued to do so in the 20th century.

The vouchers comprising this series contain the names of the two principle parties involved in the financial dispute, the amount of money involved and the date of the agreement.

The warrants of survey were a form of gaining tax advantages used in Georgia in the 19th century and very similar to the present homestead exemption laws. This series is composed of copies of those surveys in Gilmer County and miscellaneous records relating to land surveys. Researchers may find the original copies of these warrants in the Surveyor General department of the State of Georgia.

These volumes are used to document the appeals of litigants to the Superior or Supreme Courts relating to judgments rendered in the lower courts. Information in each volume includes (1) term of court, (2) names of attorneys, (3) names of litigants and (4)judgment rendered as to whether case was sustained, dismissed or transferred to another court.

A claim docket contains information which documents the claim of individuals against the property of other litigants. These dockets are similar to other civil cases except they are limited to claims cases. The information included in this volume are the term of court, case number and names of plaintiffs and defendants.

This series consists of bills of indictment, subpoenas of witnesses, interrogatories and similar court records. Most of these cases involve assault and battery, larceny charges and property disputes. See R.G. 161 - 1 - 11 for case files related to this series.

Criminal dockets are used by the Superior Court to document criminal charges filed in that court by the state and the judgment resulting from such charges. The volumes which comprise this series include the following information: (1) Date and term of court, (2) parties to action, (3) names of witnesses for plaintiff and defendant, (4) date subpoena was issued and sheriff's return and entries.

Equity cases are supplementary to cases tried under statute law but they allow courts to render judgments that are more flexible and more humane than judgments allowed under common or statute law. Information found in these volumes includes (1) name of litigants, (2) term of court, (3) nature of case, (4) case number and (5) judgment rendered.

Execution dockets are used by the court to document the execution of judgments in civil cases. Information given about each case includes: (1) names of attorneys, (2) names of plaintiff and defendant, (3) amount of money involved (usually broken down by principal, interest court costs, etc.), (4) date of judgment, (5) date of fifa, and (6) term of court.

These volumes are used to document the registrants for fishing and hunting licenses purchased in Gilmer County for the inclusive dates listed below. Information listed in these registers include (1) date of registration, (2) application number, (3) license number, (4) type of license (county, state or non resident), (5) name, address, skin color and age of each registrant and (6) amount paid for license.

The volumes included in this series contain lists of Grand and Traverse(Petit) jurors arranged alphabetically by the initial letter of each juror's surname. The amount of bjury fees for each term of court is usually listed in the earlier dates but not the later ones.
