Scope and Contents Field note books were compiled by district, reserve, and sectional surveyors in conjunction with the District Plats of Survey prior to the distribution of land by lottery, 1805-1833. Field notes record distances and points in which the districts and land lots were demarcated and numbered. References to land features, roads, and watercourses can also be found within the field note books.

Scope and Contents To acquire a land grant, an applicant obtained a warrant of survey from the land court in the county in which he wanted land. The county surveyor then surveyed the land, made a plat of survey, and forwarded a copy of the plat to the Surveyor General to be recorded.
