Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Included in this series are 123 volumes and ten cubic feet of miscellaneous correspondence of the Comptroller General's Office (now known as the Insurance Commissioner's Office.) The volumes are letter press books containing outgoing correspondence from 1868 - 1912. These volumes are largely routine correspondence of the Comptroller General's Office which deal with procedures of tax collection, disbursement of state funds, and regulation of insurance companies. Any volume will contain correspondence relating to all these functions, but a few are devoted primarily to a single topic such as wild lands (vols. 32 and 61); railroad taxes (vols. 53, 57, 58, 63, and 98); or insurance (vols. 20, 28, 33, 38, 40, 46, 48, 51, 69, and 83). The nine cubic feet contain miscellaneous unbound papers and correspondence and date from 1824 to 1927 but are concentrated in the period after 1870. Among the papers may be found the following: (1) incoming correspondence relating to tax collection and taxes on licenses for certain businesses, (2) quarterly reports of expenditures by the Comptroller's General's Office, (3) annual statements of banks and insurance companies, (4) receipts for tax payments from the county tax collector, (5) requests for funds to meet departmental expenditures, (6) appointments of notary publics, justices of the peace, and other county officials,(7) reports of expenditures of state operated institutions, (8) warrants and bills (9) election returns, (10) records pertaining to the regulation of fraternal beneficiary societies and insurance companies, (11) requests for and reports of compensatory payments to maimed Confederate veterans, (12) material relating to planning and construction of the state capital building, and (13) certification of an 1824 audit to the claim of George Cook against the state of Georgia for lands confiscated during the Revolutionary War (1824).
