Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series includes a magazine and clippings from weekly, biweekly and daily newspapers published throughout the state of Georgia. Both the magazine and the newspapers contain articles which relate to Governor Carter's reorganization of state government in 1971 - 1972. The items from the newspapers are photocopies. Some of the articles originated as releases from the Governor's Office or the Public Awareness Staff (see RGSGSERIES 1 - 15 - 78). These particular articles are, in most cases, announcements of speeches to be made by Tom Linder, or political forums to be held, or release of the Governor's plan for reorganization. These clippings, representing all geographic areas of Georgia, include editorial comments as well as reporters' findings on events and statements pertinent to reorganization. Weekly and biweekly papers usually relate activities of local politicians and publish releases from a government office or agency, although editorial comment is found throughout the span of the series. The greatest volume of editorials appears after November 19, 1971, the date of the release of the Governor's plan. These editorials comprise about twenty-five percent of the series and about two-thirds favor Governor Carter's plan. Some reaction from the people of Georgia is included in letters to editors of newspapers. Articles include reports on arguments for and against the Governor's plan from legislators and other government officials. The bulk of disagreement is reported in clippings dated after November 20, 1971. The series has no clippings prior to July 28, 1971 and none between July 29, and September 14, 1971. However the magazine's publication date is August, 1971.
