Gilmer County - Probate Court - Liquor License Bonds and Related Papers

The bonds largely comprising this series were usually issued for a period of one year. They were issued to tavern owners and to persons offering hostelry services to travelers. Each bond issuer agreed to "keep an orderly and decent house and shall not suffer any kind of gaming in his house and shall conform to the several laws now in force for the regulation of taverns and the licensing of persons to sell spiritous liquors."

These statements contains the amounts collected on both the general tax and the poll tax for a particular year. The series also contains lists of the insolvent tax payers and lists of the paupers of Gilmer County. In the 1890's, the Tax Collector began issuing monthly tax statements and continued to do so in the 20th century.

Gilmer County - Probate Court - Warrants of Survey and Other Land Survey Records

The warrants of survey were a form of gaining tax advantages used in Georgia in the 19th century and very similar to the present homestead exemption laws. This series is composed of copies of those surveys in Gilmer County and miscellaneous records relating to land surveys. Researchers may find the original copies of these warrants in the Surveyor General department of the State of Georgia.
