Defense - Adjutant General - General and Special Orders
Scope and Contents
This series contains a varied collection of general orders issued by the Adjutant-General very often under the authority of the Governor in his capacity as commander-in-chief. Evidently, in more recent times, the federal government oversees all the states' guard organizations and strives to coordinate their activities. As the name implies, most of these orders pertain to enforcement of the general rules and regulations of the Georgia State Guard. Subjects often covered by the orders include: (1) appointment of guard officers (with close cooperation from the Governor's office) (2) rifle marksmanship tests (3) sentences of guard members (4) funding of special guard projects (5) new designations of guard units (6) federal and state inspections (7) dates of annual camp instruction or field training periods (8) maximum enlisted strength of the National Guard (9) modifications of rules and regulations concerning commanding officers prerogatives, titles, etc. (10) deaths of prominent officials (11) discharges and reasons (12) authorization of equipment to be used It is significant that many of the general orders stand for many years and hence identical copies are issued every year at the same time.
