Defense - Adjutant General - Creek Indian War Militia Order Book

 Series
Identifier: 022-01-043

Scope and Contents

This series contains what is probably a fragment of a copy of an order book prepared by various members of the headquarters staff of the Georgia militia during a period of public alarm on the western boundary of the state occasioned by an uprising of the Creek Indians in Alabama. Among orders in this book are: (1) orders to appear for drill and inspection; (2) orders to patrol the Chattahoochee River to prevent Creek Indian invasion; (3) an order to issue arms to several companies; (4) an order to construct a fort to guard the western frontier of the state; (5) orders appointing officers, and (6) orders to remain at a particular station until further notice The headquarters of the militia moved around a great deal during the three months covered by the book, Forts Twiggs, Ingersoll and McCrary being the most common. A particularly interesting feature of the book is a copy of a letter dated July 5, 1836, written by General Winfield Scott while aboard a boat docked at Bryants Landing in his connection with the Army of the South. Another interesting feature is a note, obviously written years later by a Mr. Francis J. Lowe of Marion, Georgia, locating the grave of Brigadier General H.H. Lowe, so very actively involved in the military exercises included, as being near Waverly Hall, Harris County, Georgia. The volume also contains several pages of apparently unrelated debit entries for supplies and services rendered for a rather lengthy period in the mid-1850s.
