Defense - Georgia National Guard - Georgia State Guard Unit Correspondence
Scope and Contents
Originally formed in the spring of 1940, the State Defense Corps was later reorganized and renamed by the governor (1941) and the General Assembly (1943). The Georgia State Guard functioned only while the Georgia National Guard was inactive federal service during and immediately after World War II. These records can serve as proof of service, but they are not complete as men have proven service in the State Guard by other means.

Arrangement Note
The records are arranged in unit number order with several different numbering systems. A district and unit dual numbering system was employed from 1940 to 1943. Both unit and district sequences should be checked to determine service. Communities are indexed by unit and district designations in indexes accompanying the records. This system was replaced by a company and battalion numbering system in 1943. A community index for this system also accompanies the records. The records within all numerical sequences are arranged by date within file folders. The rosters in Box 12 are arranged in battalion order.
