Dept. of Game and Fish - Commissioner's Office - Director's Subject Files

 Series
Identifier: 025-01-004

Scope and Contents

This series consists of letters, memoranda, reports, studies and similar papers relating to administering the operations of the Game and Fish Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Some of the records cover the period prior to July 1972, when the Division was an independent department. Included are papers concerning: (1) management of the Division's internal operations, including personnel matters, budget and fiscal affairs, and matters relating to the Division's equipment and facilities; (2) the development of legislation, policies and procedures and the conduct of programs for protecting and improving the types and the natural environment for fish and wildlife in Georgia; (3) the enforcement of game laws in Georgia. Also included are papers documenting the activities of professional societies and other organizations concerned with matters relating to the Game and Fish Division (such as the International Association of Game, Fish and Conservation Commissioners, the Wildlife Society or the National Rifle Association). These papers also document the Director's and the Division's participation in these organizations. There are also papers reflecting the Division's liaison with other State and Federal agencies that share an area of interest (such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Georgia Water Quality Control Board, or the U.S. Corps of Engineers, the Georgia Surface Mined Land Use Board, or the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study). Other papers contained in this series reflect the Division's participation in the governmental decision-making process concerning the feasibility of or methods to be used in a wide variety of projects that would affect the natural environment (such as highway construction, stream channelization, water impoundment projects or the establishment of parks). A related series, RGSGSERIES 25-1-8, Assistant Director's Subject Files, contains much the same type information as this series. The major difference between the two is that this series has more information relating to internal administration. Also, the Assistant Director was more intimately involved with the technical aspects of wildlife management, particularly inasmuch as he also served as Federal Aid Coordinator. There are instances in which the documentation of a particular subject is divided between the two series. One portion of these records, identified as covering 1971 to 1973, span the time when the Assistant Director, Mr. Jack Crockford, became Director and as a result this portion of the files contain some of his papers as Assistant Director.
