This series contains the annual reports of the chief State mental institution located in Milledgeville, Georgia. This institution, now known as Central State Hospital, has changed its name four times in the course of its history. The format of this report has also changed considerably over the years, although there is no complete set of issues extant today. By the late 1950'5, the emphasis of the reports had definitely shifted to statistical data. A typical issue might include (1) a directory of board and staff members, (2) a lengthy narrative report submitted by the superintendent, (3) a report from the registrar, (4) a lengthy report from the assistant superintendent in charge of the Medical Department including a large number of statistical tables, (5) a report from the Occupational Therapy Department, (6) short reports from the librarian, roentgenologist, clinical psychologist, Director of Nursing, Chief Beautician, Chief Medical Social Worker, Director of Dental Services, Drug Department, Administrative Department, Farm and Dairy Division, Personnel Division, Engineering Department and Sanitary Department and (7) a very extensive fiscal report submitted by the Accounts Executive. Rather significantly, the fiscal report is the only portion of the volume indexed. By the 1970's, the format had changed dramatically once again. The dimensions of the pages had increased while the length of each issue had decreased. Brief tables of contents were included which outlined sections devoted to (1) general information, (2) a brief history of the Hospital, (3) Office of the Superintendent, (4) Administration, (5) Clinical Services, (6) Physical Health, (7) Education, Training, Research and (8) Appendix. The last named section contains graphs and other statistical data as well as the usual staff directory.
