Franklin County - Superior Court - Land Grants

 Series
Identifier: 159-01-022

Scope and Contents

This series consists of plats of surveys which show dimensions, geographic bearings, acreage, streams, the name of the grantee and the names of his neighbors. The clerk of the Superior Court is in charge of recording land transactions by transcribing the pertinent legal instruments such as deeds and their corresponding plats of survey. In this case, only the plats were transcribed, since the underlying land transactions were not committed between two individuals, but between the State of Georgia and the first individual owner of a tract of land, i.e., this information had already been recorded on the state level. Land in Franklin County was distributed under the headright system, where each qualifying male citizen was entitled to 200 acres free except for a nominal fee. He was entitled to an additional 50 acres for his wife, each child, and each indentured slave, up to 1000 acres.
