Franklin County - Probate Court - General Tax of 1798
Scope and Contents
This series consists of the 2nd half of a volume (reversed) containing the General Tax of 1798 which was imposed by law for the support of the government. While every county was so taxed, few records exist to show how this tax was collected. The tax was complicated and generally levied on things like billiard tables, gambling tables, physicians, stock in trade, factors and brokers, and other items. Only in extreme destitution or infirmity was a person exempt from paying. This volume has an early "spreadsheet" format listing with various columns the different types of taxes that had to be collected. The 47 pages are grouped into three categories: (1) amount of land lots and dwellings; (2) amount of land lots and wharves and other types of property, excluding outhouses, and (3) slaves, owned or superintended. The forms, though crude, show owners' name, the amount of property he had and the valuation of his property.
