Scope and Contents
This series consists of original and photocopied material pertaining to the design and construction of bridges built by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Included are documents on: (1) bridge, culvert and retaining wall design computations (2) design EDP printouts (3) bid tabulations (4) Bridge Foundation Investigation Reports (5) War Department and Coast Guard sketches (6) Test Pile and Driving Pile Data (7) preliminary layouts (8) as built data (9) originals and revisions of small drawings. These records serve as a source of as-built data needed for the necessary maintenance and/or rebuilding of the bridges. They also serve as a reference source for the design and construction of new bridges. The Division of Highways is responsible for the planning, location, design construction and maintenance of all roads and bridges on the state highway system. Briefly, this includes, highway and bridge construction, the inspection and testing of materials used in building and maintaining highways, location and aerial surveys, preparation of construction plans and specifications and the location of public utilities as related to the state highway system.
