Scope and Contents

This series consists of two construction ledgers used to record the expenses of constructing and equipping the W & A. Each ledger has a separate page for the company or individual supplier with the pages then divided into debit and credit columns. There are also columns for date of entry, explanation, account number and amount. Typically, the ledgers contain credit entries for: tallow, Negro hire, labor services, interest, depot construction, the construction of new cars, and payments for acquisition of right-of-way.

The entries within the ledgers are in no particular order but they are indexed alphabetically.

Related Materials

The entries are important for both the construction and the early operation of the road. One might also review the early accounts in Series 25, General Ledgers of the Auditor, of this sub-group. Vol. 2, 1854-57, contains a portion of the Confederate Government Freight Journals, pp. 130-515, Sub-group 7, Series 66.
