Treasury Dept. - Administration - House and Senate Warrants
Scope and Contents
This series contains a sampling of some of the earlier warrants addressed to the state treasurer by the speaker of the House of Representatives and the president of the Senate respectively. These official documents usually contain the amounts of money due each member of both houses of the General Assembly for each session for both salary and mileage allowances, as well as the same information for the various supporting employees including clerks, doorkeepers, pages, chaplains and even cleaners. Opposite each legislator's name are columns indicating: county (for the House) or district number (for the Senate); amount of pay due; amount of mileage due; and aggregate amount. These columns are totaled and the grand totals are indicated on the backs of the documents. The backs also indicate the approval of the warrants by means of the treasurer's signature and the date said claim was entered on the books. In years in which extensions of session time were necessary or special sessions were called, individual forms were created for each legislator indicating much the same information as the regular warrant documents but in slightly differing format. Before the War Between the States much more informal warrants were employed, again with individual handwritten papers submitted by each legislator.
