Constitutional Revision Commission - 1964 Commission - Subcommittee Hearing Files
Scope and Contents
This series contains: (1) minutes of hearings, (2) summary statements on recommendations, (3) reports from individuals or groups appearing at hearings, (4) memorandums to sub-committee members, (5) copies of drafts of revisions, sometimes section by section, (6) newspaper clippings, and (7) correspondence submitted by attendees at hearings as evidence and related correspondence. These records document the process by which the Commission sought contributions from Georgia citizens in aiding it in the revision process. These contributions cover the entire spectrum from absolute nonsense (sometimes even so deemed in the minutes) to thoughtful presentations from groups such as the Georgia Bar Association and the League of Women Voters. Each hearing was conducted by the sub-committee assigned to study a particular portion of the existing Constitution and thus the volume of records generated by hearings varies considerably. For example, the hearing held by the sub-committee on public education generated a large volume of records indicating widespread interest in this subject on the part of Georgia citizens. It is interesting to note also that hearings were often held all over the State in order to gather a geographical consensus. For minutes of some committee meetings, see RGSGSERIES 38/2/3, and for a much more extensive collection of rough drafts, see RGSGSERIES 38/2/4. For rosters of subcommittee members, see RGSGSERIES 38/2/7, Internal Working Papers of the Commission.
