Western and Atlantic Railroad - Auditor - Freight and Passenger Receipt Statements

 Series
Identifier: 018-05-028

Scope and Contents

This series consists of a bound volume containing the periodic statements of the freight and passenger traffic carried by the Western and Atlantic. It was compiled by the General Bookkeeper's Office on a monthly and annual or fiscal year basis. The volume is divided into two portions. The first portion is comprised of monthly statements from October 1849 to September 1851. These statements consist of two parts: principal articles of "down" transportation (or import transportation) incorporating freight (with amount), and number of passengers, and the income from freight, passengers and other sources (mails and miscellany) and the total income. Each major category is listed vertically and marked on a daily basis. The freight consisted of such things as lard, tallow, feathers, bar iron, flour, cattle and hogs. The passenger columns have listings for "up, down, through, way and total". The second part, income, has columns for "up, down, through, way and total" for both freight and passengers and columns for mails and miscellaneous. The last column is for total income. The second portion, fiscal year statements, is analogous to the monthly statements. The types of freight (with the addition of categories for "sacks of flour, tons of copper, dozens of eggs, bushels of oats and peas and feet of lumber), both to and from along with the number of passengers, are listed by the totals received at the stations of the W&A or by connecting railroads. Also found within this volume, and loosely connected with the series title, are two stray ledger sheets. One sheet, dated September 1862 on one side, documents the amount of supplies and munitions carried by the W&A for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Columns list: date, number list, voucher number, where from, where to, consignor, consignee, articles, weight, and charges. It appears that this document is related to Series 66, Confederate Government Freight Journals in Sub-group 8, General Freight Agent. On the back of this sheet are totals listed for the months of 1867 and 1868 and the stations of the W&A and other railroads. The other sheet, also for the year 1867, has vertical columns for the months of that year as well as for items such as: loss and damage, stock killed, water, fuel, tools, labor, offices, and right-of-way along with total columns at the end. No other information is given.
