Scope and Contents

This series consists of original and photocopied material documenting work of the Select Committee on Constitutional Revision. This Committee, created by an act of the General Assembly (Ga. L. 1977, p.1528, HR 135 - 588), consisted of: the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, the Attorney General, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the Senate, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives, a trial judge appointed by the Judicial Council, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and the Speaker Pro Tempore of the House of Representatives.

The Committee acted as the overall policy committee in directing and coordinating a continuing study and revision of the Constitution of the State of Georgia. It provided direction and guidance for continuing study and revision but also appointed individual study committees for the revision of the various Articles of the Constitution. After a study committee completed the revision of an Article, it submitted it to the Committee. A copy of the revised Article was furnished to each member of the General Assembly and to other persons as determined by the Select Committee. The Committee decided which Articles of the Constitution were studied and revised and the determined the General Election at which the Articles were submitted for approval by the electorate. It appointed study committees composed of public officials and citizens who had expertise or a particular interest in the subject matter of the individual Articles. The Committee also established a periodic review of the progress of the study committees and an establishment of a time frame for the completion of the revision of each Article. House Resolution 135-588 was repealed June 30, 1982 and the Select Committee on Constitutional Revision and all study committees were abolished. Also included in this series are the administrative files of Senator Al Holloway who was Chairman of the Subcommittee to revise Article X (Education) and Hon. Wayne Snow, Chairman of the Subcommittee to revise the Judiciary Article (Article VI).
