Western and Atlantic Railroad - Auditor - Auditor's Expense Book

 Series
Identifier: 018-05-021

Scope and Contents

This series consists of a bound expense book of the Auditor's Office that was created to show in fine detail monthly comparisons of cost. Each set of pages is constructed as a series of columns, one for each item, across the page with the payees and the amount of their bills listed down the page. The format is divided into five major categories: repairs, maintenance of motive power, maintenance of cars, transportation, and construction, with lesser columns for expenses of repairs to buildings, printing stationery and advertising, interest paid, incidental expenses and balance of accounts with other railroads. There are a total of thirty-three columns. The entries begin with the date of approving the bill upon the audit, the number of the auditor's bill and the number of the warrants executed to pay the expense. The volume entries then go into the five major categories and lesser columns. This volume is important in detailing the expenses of the railroad, as no other extant volume presents this much information to demonstrate annual comparisons. Among other things, the accounts also reveal the Western and Atlantic's larger contractors. Both the account columns and the vendors' amounts are totaled.
