Scope and Contents

In this series are the various publications of the Historical Records Survey of Georgia. They fall into the following five categories: (1) Inventory of the County Archives of Georgia consists of the inventory of ten counties, the only ones that were published. Each of these volumes gives: (a) an historical sketch of the county, including a map (b) a summary of the county governmental organization, including an organization chart (c) a brief narrative on the housing, care and accessibility of the records, which includes a drawing of the floor plan of the courthouse (d) and a list office by office, of the records in the custody of each office.

For each record series listed, the following information is usually given: (a) series title (b) inclusive dates (c) number of volumes or estimated number of papers (d) how the records are arranged (e) what information is usually given in the records (f) the size, type and number of containers in which the records are placed (g) the exact location of the records (e.g., clerk's basement, west wall) and (h) whether or not there is an index.

See Series 1, WPA County Surveys, for a listing of holdings of the notes compiled for other counties whose inventories were never published. (2) Inventory of the Federal Archives in the States consists of inventories of the records holdings of several Federal agencies that maintained offices in Georgia. Each inventory contains a brief administrative history of each office of the agency and a brief description of each records series. The series descriptions closely parallel the descriptions of county courthouse records as shown above. (3) Inventory of the Church Archives of Georgia consists of inventories of two Baptist church associations. Each inventory gives a short history of the denomination in Georgia, including narratives on its organization, agencies and religious principles. This is followed by a listing of each church in the association with a short history and a description of the records kept by each. For each record series listed the following information is usually included: (a) series title (b) inclusive dates (c) by whom kept and (d) where kept (e.g., in church office or at home).

The notes gathered about other Georgia churches for whom no inventory was published are described in Series 15, WPA Church Records Surveys. (4) Guide to Public Vital Statistics Records in Georgia is a single volume giving information about the location and extent of birth, death, marriage and divorce records in Georgia. For each of these types of records the volume shows the kinds of information available followed by a county by county listing which shows what office has custody, the inclusive dates, the number of volumes, how the records are arranged, and whether or not there is an index.

(5) Directory of Community Service Organizations in Georgia was compiled as a result of the concern with national civil defense just prior to the entry of the United States into World War II. The directory is divided into 5 volumes, each covering a geographical portion of the State. Each volume is arranged alphabetically by town. The service organizations for each town are listed (e.g., American Legion post, Business and Professional Women's Club, Boy and Girl Scouts, Daughters of the American Revolution) and for each of the following information is usually given: (a) address (b) when founded (c) with what national organization it is affiliated (d) name, address and phone number of principal officer and secretary (e) when their term expires (f) number of members (g) purpose of the organization (h) activities it undertakes and (i) what civil defense activities it is willing to undertake in an emergency.
