Western and Atlantic Railroad - General Freight Agent - Freight Rates and Routing Reference Book

 Series
Identifier: 018-07-058

Scope and Contents

This series consists of a bound reference book containing freight rates and routing information which enabled the Master of Transportation and the General Freight Agent to quote consistent rates on the W&A and for "through" rates beyond. The volume contains: timetables, rate schedules, "through" tariffs from other railroads, correspondence to agents along the line concerning rate changes, and abstracts of excise tax and stamp duties. Notices on the rate changes and "through" tariff quotations from other railroads were distributed in advance and became effective at a specific date. Each notice covered a specific commodity or "through" tariff from city to city on and off the line of the W&A. The tariff schedules from other railroads were comprised of: a classification of many articles and commodities and their designated classes, and a tariff schedule between two cities, i.e., Louisville to West Point or Savannah. Rates on food, special goods and carload rates were also set by the tariff schedules.
