Western and Atlantic Railroad - Affiliated - Mess Account
Scope and Contents
This series consists of a bound account book of expenses and assessments collected for an eating mess, composed partially at least, of officials of the Western & Atlantic. The volume is composed of three accounts- expenses, contributions or borrowing of items "for board" and assessments. The expense account includes: date, item (such as 13 pounds of ham or 1 bushel of collard greens), unit cost, total cost, and wages for a negro woman cook. The contribution or "borrowed" account shows: date, donor's or loaner's name, amount, and type of item. The assessments account lists the members name, date and amount of cash received. Internal evidence suggests that the mess was located either in or near Atlanta on the line of the W&A. The mess was comprised of seven members originally with three more joining later, but no more than nine participating at any one time. In fact, the ranks dwindled in the end. Also, the expenses for the mess rose from an initial fee of $30.00 to as high as $100.00 and finally coming back down to $38.85 per member. Being a private record at the time, the volume contains the names of two members of Capt. Fuller's Company, Georgia Infantry' John H. Boston and J.C. Welborn. In addition, Major George Hillyer, Commander of the Western and Atlantic's Road Battalion, was a member. Other members of the mess may have belonged to other units.
