Mines, Mining and Geology - Surface Mind Land Use Board - Minutes, Rules and Regulations

 Series
Identifier: 050-05-032

Scope and Contents

This series contains the Surface Mined Land Use Board minutes, committee minutes, rules and regulations as formulated at the Board meetings and related correspondence. Thus, these records document all phases of the Board's operation from its inception in 1968 to the Georgia governmental reorganization of 1972. The Board's chief function was to promote the reclamation of lands damaged by surface mining operations or the erosion caused thereby, as outlined in the Georgia Surface Mining Act of 1968. It is interesting to note that the Act was amended as the years passed, partially at least, as a result of the Board's influence. Furthermore, the Board also drafted an entire set of guidelines for surface mining operations in an attempt to avoid the excesses of the past which led to the creation of the Board.
