Mines, Mining and Geology - Surface Mind Land Use Board - Subject Files
Scope and Contents
This series contains: (1) correspondence, (2) memorandums, (3) speeches, (4) mailing lists, (5) legal notices, (6) newsletters, (7) news releases, (8) budget data, (9) personnel data, and (10) copies of proposed legislation documenting all phases of operation of the Surface Mined Land Use Board. This Board was organized in 1968 to administer the provisions of the Georgia Surface Mined Use Act. Specifically, the Board was charged with providing for the reclamation of lands scarred by surface mining and preventing other environmental pollution attributable to surface mining operations. The functions of the Board were merged into the Environmental Protection Division (Record Group 88) as a result of the Georgia governmental reorganization of 1972. The subject headings listed below indicate that the Board carried on an active publicity campaign and also enlisted the aid of other environmental protection organizations both governmental and otherwise. For minutes and rule and regulations formulated by the Surface Mined Land Use Board, see RGSGSERIES 50-5-32.
