Georgia Historical Commission - Director's Office - Historic Sites Inventories
Scope and Contents
In 1966, the United States Congress passed the Historic Preservation Act, later signed by the President. This act authorized the United States to grant funds to state agencies to be used to preserve historic sites, i.e. houses, blacksmith shops, barns, etc. Before the funds are approved, however, each state and local governmental unit must submit inventories of these historic sites to the National Park Service, a division of the United States Dept. of Interior, where the site would be judged according to local, state, and national importance and, if approved, receive funds for its restoration. The Georgia Historical Commission was designated the official agency to make this survey in Georgia. The Commission worked closely with the Georgia Dept. of Archives & History and the Georgia League of Historical Societies to collect the inventories from every area in the state. This series contains the following information: correspondence of the Directors of the Departments of Archives & History and the Historical Commissions with the members of the Georgia League of Historical Societies; and inventories of historic sites. These inventories were compiled by the Georgia League of Historical Societies and include the following information: name of county in which historic site is located; address of local historical society; type of historic site submitted; geographic location (road, name of property, other landmarks); physical description as of date; outstanding architectural features; name of buildÂÂer or original owner; year or period of construction; name and address of present owner; historical significance; title(s), citation of book(s) in which structure was mentioned; and photograph of structure.
