Georgia Historical Commission - Director's Office - Administrative Records
Scope and Contents
Before it disbanded in 1973, the Georgia Historical Commission spent over two decades working to preserve evidence of the state's past. The Commission acquired and administered historic sites and museums, promoted historic preservation, placed historical markers, and worked closely with national and local historical associations. This series documents very well the varied activities of the Commission. It includes the correspondence of the following individuals who guided the Commission throughout its existence: Joseph B. Cumming served as Chairman from 1955 to 1973; C.E. Gregory was the Executive Secretary and Director through 1959; and Mary Gregory Jewett served as Executive Secretary from 1960 to 1973. In addition, the outgoing correspondence of Bessie Lewis who traveled around the state researching locations for historical markers has been filed in this series. Minutes of Commission meetings, various reports, binders (containing project operating expense ledgers), pamphlets, and newspaper clippings make up the remainder of the series. The majority of the documents are carbon copies on yellow or blue second sheets or onionskin, but some original letters are on bond paper.
