Georgia Historical Commission - Director's Office - Project Correspondence and Reports
Scope and Contents
Throughout its more than two decades of existence before it was disbanded in 1973, the Georgia Historical Commission sponsored a variety of projects including an archaeology lab, historical surveys, museums, and the restoration of houses, forts, and other historic sites. This series contains correspondence and reports related to the Commission's projects, and it provides both historical background and information about the ways in which restoration of historic sites was accomplished. The reports in this series include internal reports such as weekly and monthly lab reports, rough handwritten field notes and journals, drafts and typescripts, and even published articles. Letters to Commission personnel, their responses, and a large number of letters from Mary Gregory Jewett, the Commission's Executive Secretary, make up most of the correspondence. Mrs. Jewett's letters consist of responses to public requests and internal correspondence with employees about policy. Other material filed in this series includes application letters for summer archaeological "digs" and some payroll information. The physical format of these records includes bond paper, photocopies, notebook paper, onionskin carbons, yellow second sheets, photographs, and newspaper clippings.
