Richmond County - Probate Court - Registers of Free Persons of Color
Scope and Contents
This series consists of original bound volumes containing lists of "free persons of color" returned to the Clerk's Office of Inferior Court - Court of Ordinary (now Probate Court) under the Acts of December 15, 1810 and December 19, 1818. Usually listed in columnar form, the information contained on the Negroes generally consists of: 1) Name 2) Age 3) Place of Maturity 4) Residence 5) Time of Coming Into State 6) Occupation or Pursuit. Additional information, in various volumes, shows: 1) Object of Coming to State 2) Amount Received 3) When Received 4) When Returned 5) Description 6) In Whose Employ At Time of Arrival 7) State Coming From 8) To Whom Paid by Clerk 9) How Long a Resident. The Acts of 1810 and 1818 mentioned above were a manumission or "formal emancipation from slavery". These registers were used as a formal documentation in compliance with and enforcing the laws.
