Stone Mountain Memorial Association - the Association - Subject Files

 Series
Identifier: 076-01-012

Scope and Contents

In 1958, the Georgia General Assembly passed an Act creating the Stone Mountain Memorial Association for the purpose of planning, constructing, maintaining, operating and managing Stone Mountain and adjacent property as a memorial to the Confederacy. The subject files of this series, 1958 to 1965, consist of (not an inclusive list): (1) memoranda (2) proposals (3) correspondence (4) by-laws (5) reports (6) contracts (7) prose (8) speeches (9) leases (10) legislation (11) blueprints (12) photographs (13) expense statements and (14) newspaper clippings. While some of the material is bound, the majority of the records is unbound. A large portion of the files deals with selection of the sculptor to complete the memorial carving on Stone Mountain. Other documents show the amount of planning and work that went into making Stone Mountain Memorial Park a major tourist attraction. These files were once in the custody of Secretary of State Ben W. Fortson, Jr. (1946 - 1979), who later served as vice chairman of the Association. Mr. Fortson, an original member of the Association, was instrumental in pushing the Memorial Carving toward completion. Additional subject files of the Association can be found in the Secretary of State's Subject Files, RG SG SERIES 2-1-2, and in the Manuscript Collection at the Archives.
