Stone Mountain Memorial Association - the Association - Minutes
Scope and Contents
This series consists of unbound copies of minutes of regular and special meetings held by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association from March 5, 1958 to December 13, 1965. In 1958, the Georgia General Assembly passed an Act creating the Stone Mountain Memorial Association for the purpose of planning, constructing, maintaining, operating and managing Stone Mountain and adjacent property as a memorial to the Confederacy. Topics discussed and dealt with in the minutes include (a random sampling): (1) election of officers; (2) land acquisition; (3) construction of convict camps, building of dams and roads; (4) approval of expenditures; (5) completion of construction work on the railroad around the mountain; (6) selection of a sculptor; (7) removal of the covered bridge from Athens to Stone Mountain; (8) lease agreements; (9) budgets, and (10) presentation of final statements. These records were once in the custody of Secretary of State, Ben W. Fortson Jr. (1946 - 1979), who later served as vice-chairman of the Association. The documents provide a guide to the early history and development of Stone Mountain Park. Additional minutes of the Association can be found on microfilm in the Microfilm Library of the Archives. For other records of the Association, please see RG SG SERIES 2-1-2, Secretary of State's Subject Files and material in the Manuscript Collection.
