The Act of August 20, 1918 which created the Georgia Department of Archives and History included as one of the duties of the department the preparation of an official register giving a full list of state house officers, legislators, judges, solicitors, members of congress, county officials and other information of an official character. The first of these registers was published in 1922. The registers currently contain: (1) the names, biographical information and photographs of all officials elected to a state house office, the General Assembly, the U. S. Congress from Georgia, the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, the Superior Courts and the University System of Georgia. The register also contains the names and biographical data, but no photographs, of the presidents heading the various state colleges comprising the University System, (2) a list of counties of Georgia, their chronological order of creation and their current county officials, (3) The latest State, Congressional, State Senatorial and State House of Representatives election returns listed by county, including returns relating to constitutional amendments, (4) A list of all former officials holding a state house office and all members of the General Assembly and the House of Representative or State Senatorial district seats they filled from the time the county was created until the present, and (5) Lists of all public libraries, post offices, newspapers and members of State Democratic and Republican Executive Committees. The register is published every two years.
