Scope and Contents

One of the provisions of the Georgia Constitution of 1798 was that the local officials of each county in the state would take a census of their respective counties every seven years beginning in 1799. Each justice of each county inferior court was to appoint persons to take the census in every militia district in the county. The collected figures would be turned over to the various clerks of the superior court who would in turn transmit them to the Governor. The Governor would next lay the figures before the General Assembly to be used by the House of Representatives to decide the legislative representation of each county. The information gleaned in these censuses varies slightly from county to county. A compendium of questions asked of each head of household follows with infrequently asked questions so indicated: name of head of household; number of free white persons in family; number of slaves and free persons of color in family; number of free white males between the ages of six and sixteen in family; number of free white females between the ages of six and fifteen in family number of deaf and dumb in family; number of lunatics in family; number of females under six in family; number of males under six in family; number of barrels of corn produced by family (1845 only); number of bushels of wheat produced by family (1845 only); number of pounds of cotton produced by family (1845 only); amount paid for horses and mules (1845 only); and names of commanding officers of each militia district (1838 only). Unfortunately only a few of these censuses survive.
