Walton County - Probate Court - Liquor Retailers Oath Book
Scope and Contents
This series contains a bound volume of a liquor retailers oath book of the Inferior Court of Walton County. The book contains the oaths taken by merchants who were licensed to sell liquor and distilled spirits in which they swore not to sell intoxicating beverages to any slaves or free persons of color without the written or verbal consent of the owner, overseer or employer of such slaves or free persons of color. After the Civil War in 1865 the oath was changed to exclude the sale to minors (white or colored) under 16 years of age. The volume is in general decay, uncleaned and in the same condition as it was brought from the courthouse by date of administration.
