Wilkes County - Miscellaneous County Offices - Miscellaneous Records
Scope and Contents
This series contains bound and unbound original papers involving, but not limited to: (1) county matters (2) habeas corpus (3) inquests (4) jurors (5) county treasurer (6) county and state tax (7) oaths (8) paupers (9) promissory notes (10) registers of fi fa's (11) roads and bridges (12) receipts (13) subpoenas (14) summonses (15) land grants (16) land lotteries (17) deeds (18) constable books (19) minutes of Inferior Court (20) minutes of Superior Court (21) slave certificates (22) caveats (23) cost dockets (24) estrays (25) tax digests (26) witness books (27) newspaper clippings and (28) guardian bonds. Although some of these records rightfully belong in already existing sub groups, a special sub group was created due to the fact that most of these records are minuscule in number or are filed regardless of office or origin. All the papers are parts of other matters and in some cases are merely fragments or estrays. In some cases, the records are in a sad state of decay although most of the records have been flattened, cleaned, laminated and put into folders according to subject matter.
