 Series
Identifier: 085-01-001

Scope and Contents

This series consists of two post binders containing condition reports, updates and related documents to same on the property of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. The earliest and most complete inventory was compiled at the request of the Hon. C.M. Candler, Western & Atlantic Railroad Commission Chairman, and completed in March 1917. It resulted from a careful inspection of all state property connected with the railroad by three men, Mr. J. Houstoun Johnston, Special Engineer, Mr. J. Grove Cohen, Secretary o f the Comission and Mr. J. Guy Huff, Assistant Engineer of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad, who walked the entire length of the right of way to record the condition and estimated valuation of all buildings, bridges, masonry, tunnels, culverts, equipment, road beds and tracks. The length of the main track from Atlanta to Chattanooga was 138 miles. In addition to the above stated items, parcels of real estate are included, accompanied by plats, but with no valuation indicated. Included also are numerous photographs accompanying the descriptions of depots, freight sheds, bridges, homes of workers, office buildings, other structures and rolling stock, and in some cases, blue prints of buildings. The data from the initial survey fills the entire first volume and the latter half of the second. The remainder of the second volume contains updated condition reports, called Addition and Betterment Reports, and related papers including resolutions, charges of failure to make needed repairs and other documents bound in reverse chronological order. Both volumes are tabbed according to type of property for ease of reference.
