Western and Atlantic Railroad - General Freight Agent - Confederate Government Freight Journals
Scope and Contents
This series consists of two bound Confederate Government Freight Journals containing entries of a special account for freight carried by the W&A for the Confederate military commands operating in Tennessee. The journals list: (1) an unidentifiable number (which may be a reference to a bill of lading), (2) the point of shipment, (3) destination, (4) consignor and consignee (who were generally high ranking officers), (5) the carrier, if any, who received the shipment for forwarding, (6) the number, units and type of goods, and (7) the freight charges. A shipper in Atlanta might forward 40 sacks of flour at a dollar a sack to Etowah and the Confederate Government would accept the $40 freight charge and reimburse the W&A. The 1864 Journal has the same content as the 1863 Journal but differs slightly in arrangement. The 1863 Journal is interspersed with entries made by the Auditor. Please see Series 25, Bound General Ledgers of the Auditor's Office, Sub-group 5. Entries for the Confederate Journal appear on pp. 17-100, 111-200, 215-300, 303-324, 327-336, 337-338, 339-348, 349-368 and 371-End. The 1864 Journal is also interspersed with entries made by the Auditor. See Series 6, Capital Construction Ledgers of the Auditor's Office, Sub-group 5. Here the Confederate Journal covers pages 130-515.
