Western and Atlantic Railroad - General Freight Agent - Daily Skeleton Trains Roster
Scope and Contents
This series, comprising the last half of a small volume titled "Skeleton Book", consists of a daily roster of skeleton trains in 1867. The rosters list: number and type of freight car, notation indicating whether the car was on the train during its departure and return, name of the locomotive, and verification of the conductor. The skeleton trains left a northern station, either Dalton or Chattanooga, and picked up empty cars en route and idle at sidings and returned them to the Atlanta car shop. Each train carried an average of twelve to fourteen cars, and two to three trains departed daily.
