Western and Atlantic Railroad - General Ticket Agent - Outgoing Correspondence
Scope and Contents
This series consists of the bound copies of the outgoing correspondence of the General Ticket Agent. The letters deal with: (1) specifications for ticket printing, (2) instructions to ticket agents on how to fill out "new style" tickets, (3) pricing of tickets, (4) accounting of ticket distribution and sales, (5) planning excursions and tours, (6) ordering conductors to recognize half ticket prices for colored laborers of certain owners, and (7) agreements with other railroads on "through" ticket pricing. The General Ticket Agent reported to the Master of Transportation and administered all activities relating to the sale of tickets, the planning of passage rates with other railroads and the periodic reporting of ticket earnings. The earnings consisted of direct ticket sales and indirect ticket sales in which the W&A shared a proportion per mile. Great effort was expended in negotiating routes and rates for passenger traffic between two, and sometimes more, railroads and each ticket was individually accounted for from sale to collection.
