Western and Atlantic Railroad - General Ticket Agent - Passage Clerk's Cash Received Book
Scope and Contents
This series consists of a bound volume used by the Passage Clerk, as agent for the General Ticket Agent, to account for the tickets distributed to the station agents for sale to destinations on the W&A and points beyond to connecting railroads. On the left-hand page is a statement of acknowledgement by the ticket agent citing the amount of tickets and their total value he was receiving from the Passage Clerk. Listed then are the: (1) number of "way" tickets, (2) stations (arranged on a rotating list from Atlanta to Chattanooga), (3) rates, (4) amounts, (5) number of "through" tickets, (6) rates, (7) amounts, and (8) total. At the bottom of each total column is a grand total along with the agent's signature. This page recorded retail ticket sales to the general public. On the right-hand page is a listing of amounts for minister's tickets. Men of the cloth had to pay only half the retail rate. The listings include: (1) number of tickets received, (2) station, (3) rate, and (4) total. The Auditor later audited each agent and usually annotated the number of tickets short, the amount due and the date of the settlement.
