Western and Atlantic Railroad - General Ticket Agent - Through and Way Tickets Sold Weekly Reports

 Series
Identifier: 018-08-050

Scope and Contents

This series consists of semi-bound oversize reports of tickets sold "through" and "way" at stations on the Western & Atlantic Railroad. The "through" tickets were those sold at one station, usually in Atlanta, to destinations beyond the line of the W&A. These reports are statements sent to the General Passenger Agent from the General Ticket Agent in Atlanta and includes columns for: (1) origin, (2) destination, (3) form code, (4) commencing and ending ticket numbers, (5) number sold, (6) proportion, (7) price per ticket, (8) total, and (9) grand total at bottom of page. These statements are usually for one week and are pinned together in groups of four to complete a month. The "way" tickets were sold for travel to and from stations on the W&A. If the trip was a round trip, a whole ticket was bought. If one-way, half a ticket was purchased. Each station had its own listing and each report, sometimes called "F 16", listed the: (1) station's name, (2) date, (3) destination, (4) whether whole or half ticket, (5) progressive ticket number, (6) total number sold, (7) rate, (8) amount, and (9) remarks. At the foot of each page is a summary listing of total amounts for whole and half tickets and a grand total of money received with the agent's signature. The sheets are pinned together so that every station reporting for one particular week would be in the same bunch. A cover summary sheet, totaling the number of tickets sold by the various stations for that week, is usually at the beginning of each group of reports. The General Ticket Agent would sign his name at the bottom in verification of these reports. Sometimes these two documents, the "through" and "way" statements, are found pinned together, but mostly they are separate entities.
