Audits - State Auditor - Chief Examiner's Correspondence

 Series
Identifier: 019-01-022

Scope and Contents

This series contains correspondence (both incoming and copies of outgoing); rough drafts of letters and memorandums in longhand; memorandums; telegrams; invoices for equipment rentals; directions for performing audits; and other miscellaneous records. This series, only a fragment of what must have been a larger file, documents the duties of the Chief Examiner of the Department of Audits, an official apparently second in command to the State Auditor. Much of the correspondence specifically illustrates the Chief Examiner's role as dispatcher of the field auditors employed by the department to audit state agencies and particularly school systems in all parts of Georgia. The problems reflected were similar to those in many government agencies, too much work and too little time to complete it. One interesting aspect of the work is the fact that the Chief Examiner often answered queries directed to the State Auditor and sent out these replies over the State Auditor's signature. Another interesting aspect of life in state government illustrated here is the active participation of all state employees, even relatively minor ones, in the internal politics of the day.
