Series 2: Letters, 1836, 1873 - 1959, and no date

Identifier: 2

Scope and Contents

The series consists of 18 folders of letters written by the opera singer Adelina Patti to the family of her nephew, Alfredo Barili, especially her great niece, Louise. The Barilis made several trips to Wales to visit Adelina Patti at her castle Craig-Y-Nos, the last in 1914, which account for the letters Louise Barili wrote to family and friends. The series is arranged by family member, thereunder chronologically, starting with Adelina Patti, and ending with 15 folders of extended families, friends, and acquaintances. The letters reveal Patti's interest in her family's welfare and her opinions of society and her career. A list of all her letters appears at the end of this inventory. Of the Barili children Patti felt closest to Louise Barili to whom she wrote a great many letters and even considered adopting. Louise Barili preserved her aunt's correspondence, as well as other family members', including her mother's family, the Vezins; she also included her own correspondence, which accounts for the letters of Louise Barili's friends and acquaintances.
