Biographical / Historical
According to the petition for incorporation (recorded in the Baldwin County Superior Court minutes on July 25, 1870 and printed in the Southern Recorder (Milledgeville newspaper), August 30, 1870), the Central Georgia District Agricultural and Mechanics Fair Company was to hold a fair in Baldwin County in order to, "...promote the science of Agriculture, the improvement of stock, and to protect the grounds and the various buildings necessary for the holding of said Fair from intrusion and injury." The usual place of meeting of the corporation was to be at the office of the Secretary (L.Carrington), in the city of Milledgeville. The petition asked for a 20 year incorporation. The petitioners were A.I. Butts (president), A. Joseph, S.J. Kidd (chairman), John Jones, O. Arnold, S. McComb, W.A. Cook, and D.B. Hill.
According to a later newspaper article (Southern Recorder, August 30, 1870) delegates were appointed to represent the Central Georgia District Agricultural and Mechanics Fair Association at the Agriculture Congress to be held in Augusta on the 26th of October, 1870.
