Biographical / Historical
The Atlanta Audubon Society was originally established in 1926 as the Atlanta Bird Club. Members of the all-volunteer Atlanta Bird Club held a meeting in 1936 and created the Georgia Ornithological Society, which serves to connect bird enthusiasts from all over the state. The Atlanta Bird Club joined the National Audubon Society in 1968 and changed its name to the Atlanta Audubon Society four years later.
The Atlanta Audubon Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife conservation and the protection and enjoyment of birds. Some club activities include annual photography contests, educational classes and workshops, Backyard Sanctuary Tours, and birding competitions. The Atlanta Audubon Society also organizes fundraisers and awards scholarships to further wildlife protection and nature conservation efforts.
Following decades of programming in Conservation, Education, and Community Engagement, the need for a more unified approach to statewide conservation on behalf of birds became apparent. On August 3, 2020, Atlanta Audubon Society made the public announcement that its new name would be Georgia Audubon.
