Chunn - Land family papers
Scope and Contents
Letters, land deeds, business correspondence, and receipts relating to the families of Elizabeth Word and Samuel L. Chunn of Cass (later Bartow) County, Georgia, and the Nathan and Mourning Arrington Land family. Correspondence includes letters to Elizabeth Word Chunn from extended family members. Papers document Civil War and Reconstruction conditions, including the destruction of Cassville in 1864, immigration to Texas, agriculture, small businesses, land investment, family relations, the status of African Americans, sickness and health care, and death. Although the collection is mostly Georgian, with Bartow, Twiggs, Coweta, and Forsyth Counties being the best represented, there are also letters and records from South Carolina, Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee.

Biographical / Historical
Samuel L. Chunn was born in North Carolina and by 1850 was living in Cass, later Bartow County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth Vance Word and they had one son, William Augustus, in 1840. William A. Chunn married Martha Delilah Land, daughter of Nathan Land and his wife Mourning Ricks Arrington, in 1860. William A. Chunn served in the 40th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He continued to farm the family’s property after his father’s death in 1863. Nathan Land served as Justice of the Inferior Court and Ordinary of Cass County.
