Georgia Archives - Public Reference Service - Service Records Typescripts

 Series
Identifier: 004-02-045

Scope and Contents

This series consists of the original compilation of persons commissioned into civil and military service of the State of Georgia and of the Federal government between 1777 and 1936. For each individual listed, the compilation shows what civil or military positions were held and the dates of service. Citations of military service are limited to State militia service and only service as commissioned officers is included. In some instances, dates of birth and death, name of spouse, date of marriage and dates of birth and death of spouse are also included. The sources used in the compilation are not given. It appears that most of the information was taken from civil commission books in the records of the Governor's Office (Record Group 1) and the Secretary of State (Record Group 2) and from military commission books of the Adjutant General (Record Group 22). The heading states that the lists include persons commissioned to State and Federal offices between 1777 and 1936. Those commissioned to county offices, between 1777 and 1800 are included as well as sheriffs and justices of the peace through 1815 and military officers between 1777 and 1860. In actuality, however, it appears that county officers are listed through 1936. A copy of this series has been bound and placed in the research room. Please see Georgia Service Records, Vol. I, A - E and Vol. 11, P - Y, 1777 - 1936, compiled by Louise Frederick Hays.
