Dekalb County - County Commissioners - Road Commissioners Minute Book
Scope and Contents
This series consists of the minutes of the Commissioners Court for Georgia. Entries frequently cite the names of Militia District 531, DeKalb County. The minutes give the date of the meeting and the names of those commissioners present. Entries frequently cite the names of the the overseers of particular roads and occasionally cite the names of hands working on particular roads. The most common business conducted was the assessment of fines and the sentencing of jail terms for defaulting on required road service. The minutes record whether a defaulter was black.
The first volume, which is bound and contains an incomplete index in the front, was a gift of Morris Edward Sumner. It was given with the "James R. Paden and T. N. Paden Family Store Account Books, 1832-1878," which have been accessioned by Manuscripts. T.N. Paden was a road commissioner.
