Public Health - Environmental Health and Sanitation - Water Impoundment Applications
Scope and Contents
This series contains licensing applications to the Department of Public Health for permission to maintain and/or improve water impoundments, usually small farm ponds and private lakes. Also included are some supporting documents and copies of permits granted. The applications contain the following information: 1) size and depth of body of water; 2) size of dam; 3) proposed use of water; 4) dates of beginning and completion of construction; 5) specific location of impoundment site; 6) location sketch; 7) name, address and signature of applicant; 8) date of application; 9) signature of person or official assisting in filing application; 10) permit number. Prior to 1966 the files also contained the following information 1) recommendations from the county sanitarians; 2) requests for applications! 3) requests for information concerning application procedures; 4) maps and charts showing impoundment locations. Information concerning larger water projects such as public lakes, rivers, dams, etc. can be found in Series 46, Watershed Work Plans File.

The records prior to 1971 are arranged in time span groups by date of application. The time spans, however, are not exact. Within each time span or year they are arranged alphabetically by county and then by permit number. (Permit numbers were assigned on a chronological basis). There is no index or finding aid.
