Scope and Contents

This series consists of bound volumes with record copies of outgoing correspondence from Georgia's chief executive officers (primarily the governor, and occasionally an officer of the Executive Council) to other state, local and federal officials, including military officers, Georgia congressmen, fellow governors, Presidents of the United States and Cabinet members; plus private citizens in pursuance of state affairs. The letters record the state's official position on various public issues.

Some of the subjects prominently discussed in these letters include: (1) Georgia's relations with Native Americans; (2) Georgia's relations with the United States government regarding the Cherokee Indian removal; (3) boundary disputes with neighboring states; (4) various epidemics of communicable diseases; (5) establishment of human resource institutions such as the schools for the deaf and blind and the insane asylum; (6) the illegal importation of slaves and runaway slaves; (7) distribution of public land; (8) election disputes and vacated offices; (9) internal improvements and the use of public labor; (10) improvements to public buildings; (11) establishment of the Poor School and public education; (12) ratification of the United States Constitution; (13) establishment of coastal defenses; and (14) creating and maintaining units of the state militia.
