Parks and Historic Sites - Historic Preservation Section - Georgia National Register Sites Reference Files
Scope and Contents
This series contains Xerox reference copies of forms created by the United States Department of the interior, National Park Service which were designed to be utilized by local historical societies and others in nominating historic sites, buildings and districts for placement on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the format changed at least once in the time period covered, and many are not filled out completely, a typical form usually contains the following information for each nomination: (1) State and county in which each site is located (2) Names, both common and historic, if applicable (3) Full address including city, county, state and Congressional district (4) Check lists for category, ownership, status, accessibility and present use (5) Owner's name and address (6) Location of legal description of site (7) Representation in existing surveys including title, date (8) Description including checklist and prose description of (9) Check-list and prose statement of significance of site and depository in which survey is located physical appearance of site (10) List of bibliographical references (11) Minute geographical data including latitude and longitude, acreage and possible governmental jurisdictions into which site overlaps (12) Name, organization represented and address of preparer (13) State liaison officer certification (14) National Register verification. Also included in the series are a list of all the approved historic sites in Georgia and a copy of the 1976 Federal Register of Historic Places covering the entire nation. The reason these forms are kept by the Historic Preservation Section is that this section served as the state liaison office in the nomination procedure (see 13 above). It cannot be assumed that all the sites successfully nominated in Georgia are represented in these files because some of the file folders are empty.
